Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes are back and ready to take on a vengeful Helmut Zemo

Despite having an official release schedule and project slate, Marvel Studios’ Phase 4 is still pretty mysterious--and completely different than any of the previous MCU phases. Now we've got to juggle TV shows right alongside our blockbuster movies--TV shows like The Falcon & The Winter Soldier, the first Disney+ streaming series on the Phase 4 roster.

Though we currently have no confirmation of just where and how the events of this show will tie into the bigger picture of the MCU down the line--unlike WandaVision and its confirmed link to Doctor Strange 2--we can safely assume that the links will be there. Somehow. Some way. But the truth is, despite The Falcon & The Winter Soldier's (relatively) fast approaching launch date, we don't actually have that much information about it, especially with regard to the plot.

We've rounded up every fact we've been able to get our hands on, and we'll continue updating this list as more news comes in--after all, Fall of 2020 is practically right around the corner.

Mackie, Stan, and Brühl are back

Some familiar heroes--and at least one familiar villain--are returning. The confirmed cast for the show looks like this:

  • Anthony Mackie is Sam Wilson

  • Sebastian Stan is Bucky Barnes

  • Daniel Brühl is Helmut Zemo

There are also rumors of Emily Van Camp reprising her role as Sharon Carter for the show, but these have yet to be substantiated. Van Camp was not in attendance or mentioned during the Marvel Studios Hall H presentation.

It's scheduled as Disney+'s first MCU show

As the schedule currently stands, The Falcon & The Winter Soldier will be Disney+'s first MCU show, to be released in Fall 2020, after Black Widow hits theaters but likely before The Eternals. The next MCU show, WandaVision, isn't on the schedule until Spring of 2021.

Civil War's Helmut Zemo is back and looking for revenge

Details about the show's plot are still shrouded in mystery, but we do know that the conflict will be driven by the return of Captain America: Civil War antagonist Helmut Zemo, who made a surprise "appearance" during the Marvel Studios panel at Comic-Con via a video recorded by actor Daniel Brühl. Brühl, in character as Zemo, taunted both Sam and Bucky in grainy, stylized footage, starting off with the infamous Winter Soldier trigger words. Upon finishing the sequence, he laughed and admitted that he knows the words no longer work--a reference to Bucky's recovery in Wakanda between Civil War and Infinity War, but then moved on to say he was "looking forward" to seeing both Sam and Bucky again soon.

The footage concluded with Zemo donning his iconic purple balaclava, a staple of the Baron Zemo character in the comics, for the first time.

Sam Wilson will be Captain America soon

Sam has been given the shield and Anthony Mackie has revealed that costume fittings for a new uniform have been taking place, so the MCU is very obviously gearing up for the arrival of a new Captain America. But it may not happen in this show--given that the name is, pointedly, The Falcon and The Winter Soldier.

The MCU doesn't have much history involving legacy names and mantle passing, with the exception of Ant-Man and The Wasp or the title Sorcerer Supreme, so there is a chance that the show might somehow set up Sam embracing his new codename fully--or, that some other surprise is in store involving the MCU's plans for the codename down the line.

Sam and Bucky don't necessarily get along

Though Sam and Bucky haven't shared much screen time with one another outside of full-on combat scenes, the few glimpses we've gotten have hinted that they don't see eye to eye--and we can expect that trend to continue in the show. Based on Mackie and Stan's comments during Marvel's Hall H presentation at Comic-Con this year, their relationship will revolve around trying to push each other's buttons, testing the waters, and trying to find some sort of common ground.
