If you've ever wondered what a superhero movie could look like with some serious, high-profile actors, get excited because THR is reporting that Robert De Niro might be in the new Joker origin film with Joaquin Phoenix.
De Niro is reportedly in talks with Warner Bros. to join the cast of the upcoming Joker standalone film, which is expected to be more focused on character building than the large scale conflict we're used to seeing. If Warner Bros. seals the deal with De Niro, he will portray some sort of talk show host who will play an integral role in the Joker's backstory.
Joaquin Phoenix will star the upcoming film as the Joker. The film has a markedly lower budget than other DC movies have had, and it's said to take on a darker, more dramatic tone than other DC films.
Very few plot details have been released so far, but we do know that it will be set in Gotham City in the 1980s, and that the Joker standalone film will be released October 4, 2019. We also know Warner Bros. has been in talks Zazie Beetz (Deadpool 2) to join the cast as well.
Robert De Niro is a very celebrated actor, winning two Oscars and being nominated for seven for his work in movies like The Godfather Part II, Taxi Driver, and Goodfellas. Despite the contemporary popularity of comic book adaptations and superhero universes like the DC Cinematic Universe, the actor has generally steered clear of them, until now.
