The continuing adventures of Columbus, Tallahassee, Wichita, and Little Rock.

Originally, Zombieland was intended to be a TV show, in which each episode would have a "Zombie Kill of the Week." But it eventually evolved into the acclaimed feature film that grossed over $100 million in 2009.

What made Zombieland fresh was its self-awareness. Most horror films take place in universes where the main characters are basically oblivious; they spend the first half of the movie figuring out who or what the monster is and its weakness, and the last half trying to kill or otherwise defeat it.

But the characters in Zombieland act as though they were raised on zombie movies; they anticipate and lean into the genre's tropes as a means of survival. This was a meta-zombie film, more in the vein of Shaun of the Dead rather than Dawn of the Dead. And if the trailers are any indication, the upcoming sequel looks to be more of the same.

Here's everything we know so far about Zombieland: Double Tap.

Release Date

Zombieland: Double Tap will be released on October 18, 2019

The Gang's Back Together

The sequel brings back the four original actors from Zombieland. Jesse Eisenberg returns as Columbus. Woody Harrelson is back as Tallahassee. Emma Stone returns as Wichita. And Abigail Breslin returns as Wichita's little sister, Little Rock.

Behind the Camera

The director and producer for Zombieland: Double Tap is Ruben Fleischer, who also directed the first Zombieland. More recently, Fleischer directed 2018's Venom.

The Zombieland: Double Tap script is written by Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick, and David Callaham. Rheese and Wernick also wrote the script for the first Zombieland, so all the ingredients are in place for this movie to be a worthy successor to the original.

Half a Ghostbusters Reunion?

Also returning is Bill Murray, whose cameo in the first Zombieland was the funniest part of that movie. He will inexplicably be playing himself despite his character's death in the first movie. Fleischer advises fans to stick around for the end credits.

Evolved Zombies

Ten years have passed since the original movie. And in that time, similar to the Romero ghouls in Land of the Dead, the Zombieland undead have also evolved to be smarter and harder to kill. In an interview with Fandango, Fleischer broke down some of the different classifications. The "Homers" are classically dumb. The Ninjas are stealthy. The Hawkings are smart. And the T-800's are the most dangerous zombie iteration of all.

New Survivors

Based on the trailers and preview footage, it seems our foursome meets some new survivors. There's Madison (Zoey Deutch), an all-pink ensemble valley girl who lives in the Pinkberry freezer at the mall. There's also the much tougher looking Nevada (Rosario Dawson)--a love interest for Tallahassee, perhaps?--and Albuquerque (Luke Wilson) and Flagstaff (Thomas Middleditch), a duo who bear a striking resemblance to Tallahassee and Columbus.

Valuable Things Treated With Disrespect

One of the funniest things about the first movie was how the characters treated once-valuable items, which no longer held any importance in post-apocalyptic Earth. For example, when Tallahassee began crying, he wiped his eyes with hundred dollar bills, which they were using to play Monopoly. We see more evidence of this sort of humor in the trailers. We see our heroes riding through the hallways of the White House, and Tallassee sitting behind the Resolute Desk in the Oval Office. We learned from a SyFy preview that when Columbus proposes to Wichita, he gives her the Hope Diamond as the engagement ring.

Running Off For Love

We see in a trailer clip that Little Rock runs off with new character Berkley (Avan Jogia), a pacifist college student who smokes a lot of weed and makes prayer hands without a hint of irony. This is the main problem that drives the story, and everyone unites to track down Little Rock and make sure she's safe.
